Rocket Nation – McComas Village Part 1
Mark your calendar – in just 53-days (Sunday, September 28th), the day after UToledo Homecoming, we UT Greek Alumni Affiliate Chapter will celebrate the 35th Anniversary of McComas Village. Bring your children, neighbors, colleagues, and friends for a tour of the houses and a firsthand look at what modern college life is like.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
In August 1985, Dr. Jim McComas became President of UT. He believed that fraternity and sorority students were among the most engaged on campus, achieving high retention rates, strong academic performance, and leaders in most student organizations on campus. In his words, they “are the center of any vibrant campus that delivers a positive, engaged student experience.” This still rings true today.
In 1986 Jim tasked Student Activities Coordinator Scott Reikofski and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Dan Abrahamowicz with drafting a “Preliminary Discussion Plan for Fraternity and Sorority Housing at UToledo.”
“Despite the relative independence of each UT fraternity and sorority, inculcated in their operations and indeed in their raison d’etre is a strong bond to the UT. This bond, as mandated by the overall philosophy of the National Interfraternity, Panhellenic and Pan Hellenic Conferences and handed down through each individual national organization, is evidenced through the support provided to the UT, through the dynamic and creative programming on campus, their strong presence in support of admissions, and through the pride these groups have in their UT affiliation.”
“There is no more visible group of students on the UT campus than Greek students and there is no more visible category of organizations than Greek-letter fraternal organizations. Their visibility and organizational muscle have become essential to such student activities as Homecoming, Spring Week and Songfest, and dominance of UT community philanthropic outreach.”
